I have been using Kratom for many years to treat my pain. Kratom comes from a native plant in Southeast Asia. According to certain studies, the plant has a lot of medicinal properties and benefits.
Introduced by Dutch physicians, this plant works to reduce the pain, tension, anxiety, and depression. It also works well as a mild sedative, and drug withdrawal.
I wanted to take it with me on one trip because I wanted to enjoy its benefits while I was traveling. However, I needed to cross state lines and ride an airplane before I could reach my destination.
Since I was planning my trip, the first thing I asked is if I can bring Kratom on a plane. While there are countries that consider Kratom as legal, there are places that considered it illegal.
With this in mind, I was afraid to be mistaken for a smuggler in some countries. Therefore, I really needed to know if it was okay that I was traveling with Kratom.
Back in May, I flew to Canada with Kratom in my luggage. While it might be 100% legal, it still comes with problems. Air travel is stressful as it is. Asking what’s in a bag is the first thing and proving it is another thing.
For the worst case scenario, you could be detained while they are testing and examining it. Of course, it was as easy on my part to tell officials and customs officers that the bag of powder I have in my luggage is legal. But, the process of drug testing in an airport could take so long. I would not want to risk a delay in my itinerary.
Because of this, I compiled a few steps that can help my trip become convenient. Here is the list of steps I came up with:
Step #1: Check The Legal Status of Kratom in Different Places
I had the responsibility to know the policies and laws before traveling with Kratom as not all countries consider using it as legal. Honestly, I did a complete homework, and I became aware of layover stops as well.
Despite the many benefits of this plant, the issue of concern is the amount of its usage. I understand that there have been endless debates regarding its sale to the public.
While some countries have banned this herb, it can still be easily obtained in other countries. There are only four countries that have banned this herb: Australia, Malaysia, Burma, and Thailand. These are the countries where you cannot buy Kratom.
Aside from that, there are also countries where you can’t even plant, sell, buy or travel with Kratom.
In Australia, the herb is banned due to the possibility of potential abuse. No such case, however, had occurred in this country. In the United States, rules vary from state to state. In Tennessee, Wisconsin, Vermont, and Indiana, Kratom is illegal to buy, sell or grow.
Other states do not consider it as outright unlawful; instead, they regulate its use. In Florida, it is only illegal in Sarasota and Broward County. Consuming it in Louisiana is illegal. In Illinois, only 18 years old and above can possess or use it. In Iowa, the law is unclear so act with caution when bringing it there.
In the US, the legal status of the Kratom is continuously changing. Therefore, you need to double check the rules and regulations before bringing Kratom on a trip. In Germany, the use of Kratom is unclear.
Previously, selling this plant comes with legal issues. Recently, however, the use of this herb has been considered under license for both domestic and medical purposes. In Romania, Malaysia, Russia, Burma, South Korea, and Sweden, it is illegal to plant, nurture, buy or sell this plant.
In New Zealand, buying Kratom leaves requires you to obtain a prescription slip. Without any such slip, it is unlawful to sell Kratom. In Belgium, Italy, and Ireland, it is legal to travel with Kratom since selling, buying, or growing this plant is also legal.
In Canada, and United Kingdom, you can quickly get Kratom as well as its substance from a local vendor without a prescription slip.
Step #2: Storing Kratom in Your Luggage
When you travel with Kratom, make sure to store the herb properly inside your luggage. I stored the herb in its original packaging, rather than disguising it as something else.
As long as I am traveling to a place where this herb is safe and legal to use, there will be no problems at all.
The reason for this is very simple. If the customs will question you and your herb is stored in its original packaging, you are keeping the delay minimal. This is true if the herb is safe and legal in the place.
If you’ve stored it in another package, it would appear different. Therefore, the whole situation will appear suspicious. This will make your situation worse since they will start to wonder if there is something illegal with your actions.
When there are suspicions, there will be delays in your travel. So, it’s better to store Kratom it in its original package when you travel.
Step#3: Know Your Response If You Are Being Questioned
My travel with Kratom was not that difficult. I was being questioned, but I told the customs and the other airport officials that the substance is known as Kratom. I explained to them that it’s a medicinal herb that I use for relaxation and pain treatment.
I assured them that bringing the herb with me is not an issue because it is a legal substance to the country I am going.
As of my experience, there were no issues at all because it wasn’t illegal in any of the countries I was flying in and out. When I pulled about two packets out of my pocket, US Customs didn’t warn me.
However, it still pays to know the laws of countries before you travel with Kratom so as not to waste your time and money. Therefore, if you are traveling to a foreign country, you need to check its legal status before bringing Kratom at the airport.
