CBD Benefits, usage, and side effects

CBD or Cannabidiol seems to have taken the world by a storm owing to its numerous health benefits.

The manufacturing and marketing of this potentially miraculous compound derived from the cannabis plant has been estimated to have a staggering annual turnover of nearly a couple billion in the US alone!

The use of CBD has been legalized and deemed safe for oral consumption by the US FDA. And also been acknowledged as a potent treatment for two rare forms of childhood epilepsy, namely Lennox Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome.

CBD or Cannabidiol is one of the 104 naturally occurring cannabinoid compounds of the Cannabis sativa or cannabis plant. It can also be extracted from hemp.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD Oil is manufactured from the extracts of the cannabis plant or hemp. It is generally obtained from the leaves, flowers, buds, and stems of the cannabis plant. The extract is then diluted in a “carrier” or MCT (Medium Chain Triglycerides) oil such as coconut or hemp seed oil.

CBD oil is extensively used in numerous food and beverage preparations. You can infuse CBD oil in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. CBD oils should preferably be mixed with a fatty base since it is an oil base itself. This helps to enhance the taste and effect of the preparation.

CBD oil is also used in topical and medicinal preparations such as ointments, creams, tablets, and capsules. It is an effective pain reliever and treatment for insomnia, amongst many other.

Since CBD is non-psychoactive, it greatly helps in alleviating the harmful effects of THC when co-administered with it.

How is CBD different than THC?

To understand CBD better, it is generally taken in relation with THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol which is a co-compound to CBD. CBD and THC have a similar chemical composition.

The major point of difference between these two is their disparate atomic arrangement. The difference in the atomic structure makes THC a psychoactive compound whereas CBD is always non-psychoactive in nature.

CBD, being non-psychoactive, possesses several health benefits for the human body, unlike THC, which can cause severe intoxication along with anxiety and insomnia if consumed in larger amounts.

CBD can be registered in many forms such as in a tincture base, syrup, isolates or it can even be inhaled or taken sublingually. But, CBD oil has been one of the most popular forms of administration that is used for both internal and external application.

How does CBD oil work?

Medically, CBD oil works by affecting the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the human body that regulates a range of functions including sleep, pain, appetite and the immune system response.

The body produces endocannabinoids that are the neurotransmitters which bind with the cannabinoid receptors in the nervous system.

CBD has been known to impact the endocannabinoid receptor activity and reduce chronic pain and inflammation by interacting with the neurotransmitters.

CBD is a non-psychoactive compound that does not cause intoxication or restlessness, unlike THC.

CBD oil is generally stronger in concentration than other CBD bases. The smell can be a bit overpowering for some to take. Also, the oils provide a denser flavor than tinctures or isolates. It can range from smelling almost nothing to having a rich earthy or citrusy note.

The effect of a particular dose of CBD oil will be different for different people. It can have a mildly euphoric effect followed by a calming sensation.

CBD oil can be infused with any oil or fatty base or with any alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage.

CBD oil can be taken sublingually, or you can use it topically on the skin.

CBD tablets, capsules and softgels are also available for oral intake. These provide you with the perfect dose of CBD, on the go. CBD oil is also used in a wide range of ointments, creams, and gels.
